The sudden passing of his good friend Tim Russert really took Hoss by surprise. As many of you know, Hoss got his first on air interview on Meet The Press. After the interview, Tim was quoted as saying, ” I was absolutely blown away by Hoss. He was articulate, intelligent and knew just how to make people feel comfortable around him. He’s got my interest peaked!”

Afterward, he and Tim became the best of friends and were often seen golfing together at the popular, dog friendly course, “The Water Hole”.

Hoss is having a difficult time dealing with his feelings of loss and sadness at the shocking loss of such an amazing individual and is considering taking a short sabatical to reflect on life and come to terms with his feelings.

So here’s to you Tim. A big Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrooooooooooooooooooooooo! I’m going to miss you buddy!

11 month old Rufus Bassetfield from Barkston, West Virginia, a small Appalachian town, stunned everyone in the room when he presented Hoss with a box full of 440 biscuits. He is so sure that Hoss is headed for the white house that he wanted to do everything he could to help that happen! “We all have a responsibility to do our part and to support the candidate we think will do the best job!” Rufus stated.

Being only 11 months old meant that Rufus didn’t have many worldly possessions of his own, but he did have a strong desire to help and one thing that was near and dear to his heart… the giant sized, basted bone Santa brought him for Christmas last year. He’d been licking it a little, but was saving it for when he got a little older. When he saw that Hoss needed a biscuit boost, he immediately set out across the neighborhood in search of a doggie who was willing to pay top biscuit for it. Luckily the poodle down the road had a biscuit stash and a hankering for basted bone at just the right time!

As blown away as the da Boss camp is by the lad’s generosity, there is one possible downside to it. Given the history of the region he’s from, we can only assume a whole bunch of McCat money is headed to Hoss’s competition!

The New Basset Times dropped a bombshell today when it was revealed that Hoss’s brother, Knuckles is in the slammer for the 5th time.

Knuckles hound, wanted for stealing pastrami, was finally brought to justice today.

Apparently Knuckles has a love for all things pastrami but has been living on the streets. This has lead him down the wrong path into a life of crime. Patrons at Sol’s Delicatesen in the lower east side have been repeatedly tripped and had their sandwiches swiped by a fast moving, low to the ground pastrami thief, which they later found to be none other than Knuckles hound.

Hoss has gone on Larry King to talk about this latest discovery. He told Larry that he hasn’t seen Knuckles since a yiddish family came and got him on their 16 week birthday. “If I had known he was down on his luck, sure I would have helped him out. Gave him a place to stay, helped him kick the pastrami habit and get a job. Maybe I’d have even given him a job in my campaign!” “In all honesty, I haven’t kept in touch with any of my brothers and sisters. Once the family was broken up, there’s really no way for dogs to call or write each other! Have you seen my paws? They make it tough to hold a pencil or use a telephone!”

Arrooooooo! I am pawing in today to talk about a subject that I hold near and dear to my heart and my stomach! FOOD! More importantly Corn! I have been seeing more and more in the news about the use of corn to create ethanol. The more corn that is used to produce ethanol the less corn there is to put in ma belly! I just don’t like it. Why are we using food to produce fuel? Why are we not exploring the alternative bio fuel markets that exist? Food prices are going sky high and dad says we might have to cut back on some treats because of it. I just don’t like where this is going!

I am making a promise right here and now that when I get elected, I will push to create more funding for alternative bio fuel research for the creation of bio fuels and bio diesel from non food crops. I will push for exploration of creating bio fuels and bio diesel from things like Jatropha and Algae. These are two very viable alternatives that provide a very promising future of biodiesel while not having an impact on our food supply and my treats!

Jatropha is also called physic nut. It is used to produce the non-edible Jatropha oil, for making candles and soap, and as a feedstock for producing biodiesel. Jatropha is a plant that may provide a socially and ecologically sound option for increased fuel consumption. The Jatropha plant can grow in wastelands (where food crops can’t). Jatropha Yields four times as much fuel per hectare (nearly 2.5 acres) as soybean and ten times as much fuel per hectare as corn. Ten times as much fuel as corn and I can’t eat this stuff! Why are we still using corn?!?! The per-barrel cost of producing jatropha is about $43 — half that of corn.

Algae is also an excellent source of Oil. Some varieties of algae are as much as 50 percent oil, and that oil can be converted into biodiesel or jet fuel. Now, while I suppose you could eat some varieties of algae. I’m not sure why you would want to make it a daily staple. Algae’s advantages include growing much faster and in less space than conventional energy crops. An acre of corn can produce about 20 gallons of oil per year, compared with a possible 15,000 gallons of oil per acre of algae. An algae farm could be located almost anywhere. It wouldn’t require converting cropland from food production to energy production. It could use sea water. And algae can gobble up pollutants from sewage and power plants. So, on top of creating a huge amount of biodiesel from algae, we could grow this stuff around power plants so that it will eat up the pollutants that they create? It sounds like a win win situation to me! So, why are we still burning corn?

In an amazing show of courage, Hoss has turned down an offer to gracefully bow out of the Presidential campaign. Early this morning, an unknown basset came to talk with Hoss about how he will be splitting the vote and may skew the election. While the meeting took place behind closed doors, a picture was leaked to us from a security camera inside da Boss headquarters.

Hoss sent this unnamed basset running out of his office with his tail between his legs. You could hear Hoss barking for blocks.. “Be gone from my sight! I want none of your backroom shenanigans. I am a basset of principle and I cannot be bought!”

I guess it’s lucky for us that he was offered money and not french toast or who knows what would have happened! Bassets have no clue what to do with cash.. but food. That’s another story.

Arrooooo, I was watching the big talking screen today and saw that John McCain and Hillary McClinton want to have a federal gas tax holiday where they repeal the federal gas tax of 18.4 cents per gallon for 15 weeks during summer. Sounds great. 20 cents less per gallon at the pump. While at first I was all in favor of mom and dad having some extra bucks in their pocket since that could very well mean more biscuits for me. I did some thinking about what it really meant. Dad helped me out with the math on this one..

The average American drives 15,000 miles per year.
A low MPG estimate is 15 miles per gallon. Most cars do much better than this.
The gas tax holiday will run from Memorial Day though Labor Day. A little less than 15 weeks. We will use 15 weeks for this example….

• 15,000 miles per year divided by 52 weeks in a year gives you 288 miles per week. This would be about 20 miles to work each way, 5 days a week.. with a few extra miles per week for other travel…
• 288 miles per week multiplied by 15 gives you 4327 miles driven during the gas tax holiday.
• 4327 miles driven divided by 15 miles per gallon gives you 288 gallons of gas purchased during the federal gas tax holiday.
• 288 gallons of gas purchased multiplied by .184 (18.4 cents per gallon) gives you $52.99

So, the average American will save a whopping $52.99 during the 15 week federal gas tax holiday…. That could buy a lot of biscuits and/or chew toys. But at what cost?

I saw John McCain on CNN this morning bashing Barack Obama saying he was out of touch with lower class Americans. McCain went on to say that this federal gas tax holiday will allow poor people to go out for a nice meal… or buy their kids a toy… He forgot to mention buying their dogs some extra biscuits.. He also forgot to mention that the gas you are going to need to buy in order to go buy that toy or get to the nice restaurant is going to offset the actual amount you can spend… shame on him! Dad said that McCain’s comments seemed rather condescending and elitist.

Hillary is also bashing Barack Obama saying he is out of touch and he doesn’t understand lower class Americans. Hillary needs to stop playing politics and actually do some math herself. Dad said he would be happy to help her if Bill was too busy with the interns…. I’m not really sure what that meant.

Dad and I tend to agree with Barack Obama on this. He knows that this federal gas tax holiday is going to provide the average American $53 or…. $3.53 per week… or 50 cents per day…. and has said as much..

At the same time, this federal gas tax holiday is going to cost the federal government billions in funding for highways essentially putting people out of work. Without money to fund highway and infrastructure development, you can’t pay people to do the work.. so.. lets take $10 billion dollars out of the economy and give it the average American so we can get an extra gallon of gas a week for 15 weeks and drive an extra 20 miles each week. Sounds good to me.. what’s another $10 billion dollars going into the pockets of big oil companies.. I mean heck.. they have only been making record profits quarter after quarter after quarter.. lets give em some more..

Now.. none of the candidates.. or people pushing for this federal gas tax holiday have even bothered to mention how the oil companies are going to keep raising the prices during this federal gas tax holiday.. so come September.. when they reinstate the federal gas tax.. you are not going to be paying 18 cents more per gallon… you are going to be paying 36 cents more per gallon…

Where do I come up with this number? Hmmm… According to Official Energy Statistics from the U.S. Government
the average gas price in the us as of 4/14/2008 was $3.389… this was up 63 cents from 4/14/2007 which is a total rise in cost of 63.2 cents.. or.. 1.2 cents per week… So, during the 15 week federal gas tax holiday… prices could reasonably rise 1.2 cents per week.. or a total of 18 cents…

So, Make no bones about the federal gas tax holiday. When labor day comes around, you will be working even harder to fill your tank and instead of saving $3 per week.. you will be paying out an extra $6 per week. Tell your favorite candidate that instead of a lame attempt at trying to get more votes.. they actually need to do something to help cut the rising cost of gas or better yet… VOTE BASSET!

After being denied the opportunity to join in the Democratic candidates debate in Philidelphia last night… Hoss decided to take matters into his own hands.. errr.. paws.. and crashed the party!

“We made several requests to participate in this exchange. Claiming that it would be good practice for all involved and get us ready for our face off in the fall.” Hoss told us. “We were laughed at. So I decided to take a different route.”

A plan was hatched to smuggle out favorite 65#, floppy eared friend inside the arena so he could try to get some press coverage rolling for his campaign. Once inside, Hoss began working the crowd. No one can resist a basset hound and he soon had them oooing and aaaaahhhing and wishing they’d brought biscuits.

Most were shocked to learn that Hoss was even running for president and said it changed their perspecitve on this election and truly gave them hope! “FINALLY! A candidate for real change!” Jebediah Abraham was quoted as saying. “He’s a true messiah for the people!” Baretta Winchester tells us that she had planned to vote democrat because she thought it was her only non-republican choice, but now she was throwing her support behind Hoss!

Hoss was able to lick babies and shake with many people inside before security was alerted to his presence and he was ushered out the door by several large security guards.

While cameras were rolling, no mention of this incident could be found on any of the major news networks.

Sign outside of a local bowling alley that Hoss recently visited.

Hoss scores one for all the 4 leggers in the world by scoring an impressive 37 in his first attempt ever at the sport.

“It was tough at first”, Hoss was quoted as saying. “When I first booked this appearance, I wasn’t really thinking about the fact that I can’t pick up a bowling ball. Having no opposable thumbs makes it difficult.”

After a few failed attempts where he even tried to pick up the ball with his mouth, he realized that it would be much easier to place the ball near the foul line, go back a few steps, get a running start and then “push” the ball down the alley with his snooter.

This made for quite a few laughs when he actually chased the ball all the way down the alley and crashed into the pins himself. Resulting in his highest scoring frame, a strike!! “Instinct just took over. It’s tough when you are a dog to resist the urge to chase a moving ball and I just wasn’t mentally prepared that first frame.” Hoss said. “One of the guys in the next alley told me I needed to loosen up some and have a few beers. Apparently bowling is no fun sober.”

As the day went on, Hoss began to get the hang of the game and even though he was the first of his kind to ever set paw in a bowling alley, it sure was an experience for him!

“There’s ain’t nutin’ natural ’bout no dog bowling”, one PA local said. “He ain’t foolin’ us. Bowl all you want dog. We know you still ain’t like us.”

As of this writing, Hoss is continuing his tour of PA and might just be coming to a town near you next!

Early this morning, a noxious odor filled Vote Basset headquarters, choking volunteers and sending everyone running for the door. When interviewed, those who were inside the building claimed they were suddenly enveloped in a rotten stench that made their throats burn, their eyes water and their noses curl.

Haz mat teams from surrounding towns were called in to help track down the source of the odor but by the time they arrived, the smell had disipated and no one was sure where it had originated.

After setting up fans to completely air out the building, EPA officials gave the all clear when air quality tests came back clean. “We take all reports of toxic vapors very seriously”, Jill Woofenstein field agent for the EPA told us. “Test results show that the air quality inside the building is as good as it can be. All tests came back negative”. When asked about the source of the smell, Ms Woofenstein told us that at this point it was unclear where the odor originated, but that they would come back immediately if any further vapors were detected.

When asked for comment, Hoss was quoted as saying, “I think it might have been Uncle Irv!”

Hoss has no idea where the toxic odor originated. He blames Uncle Irv!
